SUM TO ZERO · chris berlin, 2026
Five families of parallel lines, each shifted by γ. Every crossing becomes one rhomb. The only rule the generator enforces is γ0 + γ1 + γ2 + γ3 + γ4 = 0, so γ4 is never yours to set. Everything else is your decision.
The picture is a legal slice, not a pattern: a Penrose rhomb tiling, which never repeats.
Method: N. G. de Bruijn's pentagrid (1981). A tiny fixed offset keeps the grid regular, so every setting gives exactly one tiling. Part of berlin.studios. chrisberlin.com
Pick one. It becomes your piece, and you can keep tuning it.
